Kids Yoga Play !
Ages: 6-10 years old

Yoga Play is an adapted yoga practice especially for children.  The teaching  focuses on a number of modified postures or asanas to fit the child’s stage of development.  Combined with the yoga is creative movement, story telling and song for a stimulating and creative workout!

This class is taught by Donna Achtem.  Donna taught elementary school physical education for fourteen years.  During that time she also took many yoga classes and continues her practice here in Markham.  Having a strong interest in working with children she recently completed the teacher training for “Creative Yoga and Movement for Children” at the Kripalu Yoga School in the USA.

She is looking forward to working with children once again in Yoga Play!

Lydia demonstrating her strength and creativity!
Lydia demonstrating her strength and creativity!
Lydia has been involved in dance, fitness and healthy lifestyle activities throughout her life. She has enjoyed blending her background in applied science with her creative spirit in a long and diverse career path including five years with a consumer health web site.  Over the years Lydia realized that she needed to adjust her fitness regimen to protect her joint health and yet continue to build strength. She was surprised to find the solution in Yoga. In addition, there were the wonderful benefits of quieting a racing mind and relaxing a body very sensitive to stress. A graduate of the Kripalu Teacher Training Program in 2004, Lydia has recently completed the 500 hour Kripalu Professional Teacher Certification. Lydia enjoys diversity so she regularly participates in classes and workshops in
the Anusara, Moksha, Ashtanga
and Yin Yoga traditions and finds inspiration in all.  Currently Lydia teaches the Power Flow Yoga and Yin/Hatha Yoga classes on the class schedule!  Come out and experience the diversity in classes that Lydia has to offer!

Melanie in Garudasana, Eagle Pose
Melanie in Garudasana, Eagle Pose
Hello, my name is Melanie Checkeris.  I’ve been practicing Hatha Yoga since 2001.  Very quickly I experienced the benefits of learning how to breathe, to calm the mind and listen to my body as I held each pose or asana. Yoga has become an integral part of my life. This practice led me to obtaining my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certificate from the very experienced Susan Graham Guddat in June 2007.

My educational background/experience includes an Honours Bachelor Degree in Physical Education and Health Promotion (1991), a Bachelor Degree in Education (1996) and I held a certificate as a Professional Fitness and Lifestyle Consultant by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology for 7 years (1993-2000). During the day you can find me at the Ontario Science Centre where I am the Manager of School Programs.

I believe, and have experienced personally, that practicing Yoga does have significant long term health benefits both physically and mentally. Hatha Yoga, in particular, is a very gentle and powerful way to learn poses which strengthen and stretch our joints and muscles, improve the function of bodily systems, expand the breath and increase our ability to focus on the moment. The mindfulness needed for Yoga has an effect that can be taken into all parts of our lives.

I look forward to teaching you, learning from you and sharing in the positive benefits Yoga has to offer all of us and the people we interact with daily.
Thank-you and Namaste!
